Century-old King Street store adds 2nd shop in Mount Pleasant
A downtown Charleston shop that’s been serving customers for more than 100 years is finally opening a second location — and it’s chosen Mount Pleasant to plant new roots.
Since 1917, M. Dumas & Sons has operated solely on King Street, but CEO and co-owner Gary Flynn felt it was finally time to expand the flagship store.
Come Sept. 13, M. Dumas & Sons will be a new tenant in the Belk-anchored Mount Pleasant Town Centre. The menswear shop will join existing affiliate Southern Tide by M. Dumas, which solely sells the Southern Tide brand.
Flynn said Southern Tide’s success contributed to the decision to enter the Mount Pleasant market this year. The Mount Pleasant location of M. Dumas & Sons will feature a variety of shoes along with clothing from brands like Barbour, Faherty, Duck Head and Johnnie-O.
“I also live in Mount Pleasant and know firsthand how my neighbors feel about getting in and out of downtown Charleston; most don’t go or only go for special occasions,” Flynn said. “We’re excited to bring M. Dumas and Sons to an area experiencing tremendous growth, and we know our Mount Pleasant customers will appreciate not having to drive downtown.”
The new 4,000-square-foot store will mirror the King Street selection with brands like Barbour, Faherty, Duck Head, Johnnie-O and more.
“The upscale men’s clothier will be a natural fit in our shopping center, and we suspect the storefront will quickly become a staple among shoppers,” said Kathi Herrmann, Towne Centre marketing director.
Towne Centre has been a shopping destination for the Mount Pleasant community since 1999 and recently welcomed national brands American Eagle and Aerie to backfill the former Gap and GapKids spaces.
Hermann said the stores are expected to open later this year and “will be a great addition for teens and young adults.”
